North Shore II

I say "II" because this is the 2nd visit this year. Stay tuned for III and IV.No big ships going through the canal when we stopped in Duluth for lunch at Grandma's on our way up. The bridge and the harbor tour boat exchanged horn signals though - probably for the benefit of all the visitors at the canal. We spent a lot of time relaxing on the deck that is just a short stone's throw away from Lake Superior.Sunrise each day was clear over calm water.
We saw 9 ships passing the cabin. The first evening we noticed that about a half hour after the Lee A. Tregurtha passed, the wake rolled into shore. We could see it coming for quite some time before waves began softly splashing on the rocks. Otherwise the lake was extremely calm and silent the whole time we were there. I'm sure it was the wake of the American Century scheduled to arrive in Duluth between 2 and 3AM that I heard splashing on the rocks at 3:15AM. That would be a 10th one for the record.
We walked along the path of old Hwy 61 at Silver Creek Cliff tunnel. Aunt Bevie and Uncle Fay at Palisade Head with Shovel Point at Tettegouche State Park in the background. We made the trek out to the end of Shovel Point after a picnic lunch in the park. The retired tug, Edna G, rests at two Harbors. The city saved her from destruction and restored her for all to appreciate. After visiting Edna G, Bevie and I walked to the lighthouse at the end of the breakwater.
Some rocks just beneath the water at Iona's Beach. Sunshine through the ripples make them appear stiped but they are actually pretty uniform in color. All the rocks on a stretch of beach 4 0r 5 football fields long and half a football field back from water's edge are pinkish orange except for a few gray ones.

On the way home we went by way of Hibbing to visit my cousin Harley and his wife, Sherry. Their son, Greg came by, too.

The peak night for viewing a particular shower meteors happened while we were there. One night I got up about 3 for an hour or so and watched. I saw a dozen or so but the moon was high in the sky so I'm sure there were many that weren't visible. So I stayed up the next night before the moon rose and watched the sky for more. Before I went in for the night I got to see yet another wonder - the moon rising with it's light path shimmering on the water. I must add that day and night temperatures were perfect during our whole stay and no bugs!

Is that dad proving that it's just a stone's throw in the second picture from the top?
